Not only because I love it, but also because it was needed… this brick landing was installed due to rot from a leaky door.

Years ago we started using half bricks with sand and urethane for kitchen floors, now it seems like I can come up with a place to use them everywhere.  It’s of course a nicer finish when you can plan for thickness difference between hardwood flooring and the half bricks to get an even transition, but in a retro-fit scenario like pictured above, you just go with a modest transition strip.

The flooring above was cut and removed.  The plywood subfloor, which had rot, was patched with new plywood.  The doors were re-hung in new jambs with new oak thresholds. The bricks were then installed to the subfloor using construction adhesive.  After the majority of the pattern was put together, we pictured framed the brick with pine trim and proceeded to brush in sand.  Four coats of urethane later, the above photo is the finished product.

It makes a great interior finish that captures a signature feeling evoked by all of our work.
