Many times we’re in need of a desk top, whether it be for storage in the basement, a makeshift office in another bedroom, or a step above such as a bartop, island or more.

It just so happens that we needed to make a quick countertop for a kitchen sitting area under a window.  I’ve always like the look of fir and therefore that was the wood of choice for this project.

You’ll see from photos below that we used a simple glue and dowel method for joining the boards together while in a rough cut state.  The top was then clamped together over night in a heated area to set and dry.

The next day, the top was planed for thickness and smoothness, sanded, shaped with a router and finish prepped to receive a varnish.  I like using the Helmsman Spar Varnish because of it’s slightly yellow tint and ability to stand up UV rays.

After 4 coats and sanding in between, the top is basically finished and ready for installation and use.  We made a quick set of cubbies for the to sit on, be fastened to, and that’s it!  Now this can be re-used for years to come in any room of the house.
