A different way to divert rain water.

When it came time to replace a rotting deck, it gave way to an idea about diverting rain water that came through to the front entry below.

Without tearing off the entire deck and making an enormous project out of this, we came up with a simple and clean solution by making aluminum troughs in-between each joist to carry rain water away from the front door below.  While the original deck boards were being removed, we bent standard brown and white aluminum coil stock into boxes the exact size of the space in between the joists.  The troughs were fastened at a slight angle inside the joists with nails and silicone.  Ice and water guard was put on top of the framing, covering from one trough to the next as well as back to the house.  You can see from the pictures below, that in theory, the rain water will drip between the deck boards, into the aluminum troughs and carry out to the edge of the deck, creating a dry area underneath.

This simple and affordable remedy works and looks clean and neat from below.  In the future, painted lattice or decorative strapping could be applied to the ceiling for a more finished look.  All in all it was a nice small project!
