Our Gambrel renovation has been taking shape in so many ways over the past couple of months, it’s hard to know where to start.

As seen above, we’re using Huberwood’s “Zip System” wall and roof sheathing.  So far, this product is proving to be a great system for home building.  It’s a your typical OSB sheathing with a factory applied weatherproof membrane on one side.  This product, combined with their patented tape, makes for a weathertight building while eliminating traditional house wrap on walls and felt paper on roofs.  However there is a downs side! Unfortunately when cutting odd angles and such, you’re left with a high wast factor due to the fact that the product is not reversible.

Another highlight is the design itself.  We’ve expanded every aspect of this home.  The new master bedroom addition on the second floor pictured above takes a beautiful proportion to the original house, it’s hard not to just really appreciate the beauty of it.  Pushed slightly back from the original home while also including a master walkout roof deck, the second floor maintains perfect aesthetics to the original.

New stone columns have been finished at both ends of the home to support two new sections of porch roof.  Just from taking a look at the main picture above,  you’ll find it hard to tell the difference between the old and the new.  In short, the masonry work has been nothing short of perfection.

Some other small details have been added to the mix, which make this home a real show stopper.  A noticeable but importantly not flagrant flare has been added in the first three shingle courses around the house.  We’ve also decided to weave all the shingle courses on the exterior corners.  In person, this siding job is breathtaking.  We actually pushed to use red cedar roofing shingles for siding.  Too commonly we see new siding jobs with tight, uniform, white cedar shingle courses.  Here you’ll see a thicker, heavier shingle, with a slightly rougher butt end causing a more robust look.  In person, the red cedar siding and the red cedar trim looks original, craftsmen-esque, and true to New England.
